The official Google Voice application will in the next few week be available to the iPhone via the App Store. Even though the application has been approved, Google just needs to revamp the application to work with the iPhone 4 and iOS’s multitasking capabilities. If you’re a Google Voice user and you’re on an iPhone, this is great news.

The approval the official Google Voice application has taken quite a long and winding road. It was only last July, that Apple Google Voice application. This lead to a FCC inquiry into the matter. Apple claimed that the application “duplicated existing functionality”, a line of thought that did not convince anyone as Apple subsequently accepted similar apps. For well over a year, there were no other developments and the odds of Google Voice ever making its way to the iPhone, at least as a native application, seemed bleak.
The status quo changed on September 9 2010, when Apple published a set of guidelines telling developers which applications would not be allowed into the App Store. In spite of these instructions, none of the new set of rules seemed to apply to Google Voice. This sparked rumors that
third-party Google Voice apps might soon make their way to the App Store, and sure enough, a handful of applications have since been approved. While the existing applications are attractive, they are nonetheless provided by third parties. This raises the extremely probable proposition that even though we haven’t gotten the chance to use the official Google application on the iPhone, it’s highly possible that the official Google application will include functionality that other 3rd party apps don’t. Amongst others such functionalities could include, push notifications for inbound SMS and voicemail messages.
