Google TV brings the PC and web on your TV!

Google TV promises to not only bring the web on your TV but also the PC into your TV! One has to ask, is this the future of television? Can Google do what no other company has ever managed to do in the past? That is, can Google bring the PC into your TV? To answer this question, one has to contrast and compare the features of Google TV to those of a PC. So let us get on to it.

To begin with, Google TV runs Android on an Intel CE4100 media processor. In essence, this is to say that Google TV has a 1.2GHz Atom core that is boosted by extra graphics hardware that makes it capable of capturing and decoding 1080p video. By all means, the Android used in Google TV is way different from that used on Android smartphones. The biggest noticeable difference between the two is of course the capabilities and perfomance of the two operating systems.

In addition, Google TV uses Chrome and Flash to deliver web content. The fact that it uses Flash stands in stark contrast to Apple TV and from this perspective, Google TV can be seen to exploit or take advantage of the lack of Flash content in Apple TV. However, having said that, it's use of Flash is also financially strategic. This is the case because it is only through Flash that Google can serve ads during the play back of video content. This means that while in principle and practice videos from You Tube can be played back in HTML5, they will only be served via Flash in Google TV.

Currently, Google TV is available via Sony's Internet TV and  Logitech's Revue box. Whichever brand you chose, the basic Google TV interface and experience is the same. It's use if fairly straightforward and familiar because of the fact that you are just using a browser to do everything that you normally do in PC.
In view of the above, it is our considered opinion that while Google TV does not bring the entire PC to your TV, it nonetheless opens and leads the way to this end. We should expect more improvements and advances once the code for Google TV becomes open next year. For the time being, Google TV is the best PC that is available in your TV!
