The iPhone jailbreak community has now come up with a mod that brings the complete look, touch and feel of iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone 2G, 3G and iPod touch 1G and 2G. Even though the mod is essentially based on iOS 3.1.3, it nonetheless replicates the experience of iOS 4 on first and second generation iPhone and iPod touch.
This custom firmware, aka WhiteD00r, includes everything that's to be found in iOS 4.2.1: wallpapers, new semi transparent dock (and UI), backgrounds, all new icons from iOS 4.x, Voice Control, multitasking, video recording, and more.
