Class Action Lawsuit Over the iPhone 4′s Glass hits Apple

L.A. County resident Donald LeBuhn has filed a lawsuit against Apple. This is not the first class action suit that’s been filed against Apple.
In the suit, LeBuhn claims that Apple hid the fact that day-to-day use of the iPhone 4 would eventually lead to cracked glass. LeBuhn became indignant with Apple when his daughter dropped his newly purchased iPhone 4 from an approximate height of three feet.
The iPhone 4 features glass on both the front and the back, making it more susceptible to breakage. According to a report by Per SquareTrade:

• iPhone 4 owners reported 82% more damaged screens in the first 4 months compared to iPhone 3GS owners;
• Overall, the reported accident rate for iPhone 4 was 68% higher than for the iPhone 3GS;
• An estimated 15.5% of iPhone 4 owners will have an accident within a year of buying their phone.

The suit goes on to add that “months after selling millions of iPhone 4s, Apple has failed to warn and continues to sell this product with no warning to customers that the glass housing is defective.”

iPhone 4 Antennagate Is Biggest Technology Fail Of The Year 2010

iPhone 4 owners will not be amused to know that Antennagate is officially the biggest technological failure of 2010. Antennagate is the well known Grip of Death in iPhone 4 that is caused when users cover part of the antenna in a band around the phone's edge. When the problem began to emerge, Apple out rightly claimed that the problem didn't exist. Latter on, Apple claimed that the problem was caused by a software issue. Finally, Apple admitted that Antennagate existed and as a consequence gave away free cases to sort out the problem. The free cases latter on led to Glassgate.

How to avoid Glassgate and Protect your iPhone 4

It is my view that the back glass of the iPhone 4 presents iPhone 4 owners with two practical problems. The first one is the risk of the back glass falling and thereby cracking and the second is the glassgate problem where the back glass of iPhone 4 gets scratched by particulate dust and over time ends up cracking.

In fact, the risk of the back glass cracking is quite high especially after the back glass has been scratched and your iPhone 4 drops. From a “strength of materials” point of view, the scratches that are caused by the glassgate effect form points of weakness within the back glass.
