Recommended: How to fix Greenpois0n rc5 no Cydia icon problem.

The recommended fix for installing the Cydia icon after jailbreaking your iPhone with GreenPois0n rc 5 is to install RedSn0w 0.9.6 on top of my GreenPois0n jailbreak. This way, you still retain your untethered jailbreak, while gaining the necessary Cydia icon.

Step 1: Jailbreak your iPhone with GreenPois0n using this tutorial.
Step 2: Use this video tutorial to install RedSn0w on top of  GreenPois0n installation in order to gain access to your missing Cydia icon.

Redsn0w 0.9.7 for Windows to Untether iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak with iOS 4.1 Firmware.

The iPhone Dev Team has confirmed that a Windows version of Redsn0w 0.9.7 is on its way. This version will jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 with iOS 4.1 IPSW instead of iOS 4.2b3 firmware and SHSH blobs.

"Since Apple still serves the 4.1 IPSW (not blobs!), we’ll do a Windows redsn0w release for untethered 4.2.1 via Monte-4.1"

Unfortunately the Windows version of Redsn0w 0.9.7 will not be as fast as its Mac OS X counterpart. This is mainly due to the fact that the Windows version of Redsn0w 0.9.7 will be using filesystem instead of RAM. This will significantly slow down the entire process or as the dev team puts it:

"Please don’t complain too loudly about how slow it takes The Win version uses filesystem instead of RAM: slow!"

iPhone Dev Team releases Redsn0w 0.9.7 jailbreak tool

The iPhone Dev Team has released Redsn0w 0.9.7 jailbreak tool for Mac. This new version fixes all sandbox-related issues, including Bluetooth problems on an untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak.

The Windows version of Redsn0w 0.9.7b5 is also ready, but has yet to be released because it is painfully slow to use; however, once the performance issues are fixed then the windows version will be released.

There is actually a Windows version of beta5, but it’s excruciatingly slow compared to the Mac version because it’s forced to use files on your hard drive instead of RAM while it’s processing the very large IPSW images.  It really is very very painfully slow, so we probably won’t be releasing it for testing purposes unless it can be sped up somehow.

Dev Team Updates RedSn0w iPhone Jailbreak to 0.9.6b6- Fixes Battery Drain Issues.

Those who have recently updated their baseband to 06.15.00 so as to jailbreak and unlock their iPhone have been facing battery drain issues. This problem is not caused by UltraSn0w or RedSn0w, but by the hacktivation process.

Precisely, due to hacktivation, iOS 4.1 and 4.2.1 constantly keeps on looking for valid push certificates either via wifi or via your data plan (Edge or 3G). As a result, this continious process runs down your battery- it does not give your battery a break and it may even led to the overheating of your iPhone. However, If you didn’t hacktivate your iPhone but simply activated it with an official carrier then you should not face this problem.

Developer @sbingner (author of TetherMe) has made some excellent progress devising a new hactivation method that kills two birds with one stone for all you ultrasn0w unlockers. His tool, “Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM)” tricks your iPhone and iTunes into creating legitimate activation tickets even though you’re unlocked with ultrasn0w. This means you get the full benefit of push applications, and your battery life increases substantially.

On his website, Sbingner explains how to fix this problem by tricking your iPhone and iTunes:

Step 1: Add the following repo in Cydia: http://repo.bingner.com

Step 2: Install “SAM” and “SAMPrefs” from this repo.

Step 3: Now you must revert to a stock lockdownd for SAM to function. To do so, download RedSn0w 0.9.6b6 or Mac or RedSn0w 0.9.6b6 for Windows and then launch RedSn0w. After this, select the “Deactivate” option.

Step 4: Go to Settings > SAM, then click “De-Activate iPhone”.

Step 5: Make sure iTunes is on, plug your iPhone and let iTunes activate your iPhone. If iTunes says “Invalid SIM”, you will need to manually select a carrier under Seetings > Carrier.
