In a few hours time, iPad, iPhone and iPod touch owners will get to experience the more than 100 new features and innovations that will come with iOS 4.2. However, it is iPad users who will appreciate iOS 4.2 the most. This the the case because iPhone users have already experienced some of these features, for instance, multitasking, improved mail etc. Either way, here is a list of some of the noteworthy features that you will soon be enjoying in iOS 4.2.
- Multitasking
This is the ability to run more than one app at a time and switch between the running apps instantly. This feature is disabled in iPhone 3G and totally absent in the iPad. However, there are tweaks that can enable this feature in iPhone 3G.
- Folders
This feature allows you to organize apps into folders with drag-and-drop simplicity. This will facilitate faster access to your favorites as well as browsing and managing thousands of apps. These feature is present in all iPhones but absent in the iPad.
- AirPrint
This was long over due. It will now be possible to print mail, photos, web pages, and more from your iDevice directly to a printer that is connected to a wireless network. This feature will be new to all iDevices.
- AirPlay
This feature will allow you to wirelessly stream videos, music, and photos from the iPad, iPhone and iPod to the new Apple TV as well as stream music to AirPlay speakers or receivers including the AirPort Express.
- Game Center
From now on you will be able to experience social gaming on your iPad. With game center, you can find friends or use auto-match to play multiplayer games against new opponents. You will also be able to track achievements and compare high scores.
- Improved Mail
You will be able to see messages from all of your e-mail accounts in a unified in-box. In addition, it will be possible to organize messages by threads and open attachments in third-party apps.
- Keyboard and dictionary enhancements
You will be able to choose from more than 30 new keyboards and dictionaries. These dictionaries include Arabic, Greek, and Hebrew.
By and large, iOS 4.2 is expected to fix a number of issues. iPhone 3G and iPod 2G users expect iOS 4.2 to fix the extremly slow performance that they have experienced with iOS 4x. Currently Apple is being sued for turning the iPhone 3G into a useless iBrick. Apart from that there is also the security hole that results in calls being made even when the iPhone is locked. Finally there is the well known antenna problem that results in signal lose.
